Providing high-quality power to the world

I am a technical engineer at Zisheng Electric, and I have been working in the power transformer industry for more than ten years. Working with various EPC projects has become a regular part of my work.
Today, I am not going to talk about transformer selection or installation. Instead, I want to focus specifically on transformer after-sales support for EPC projects.
Many general contractors consider equipment energization and acceptance as the final milestone. However, based on my experience, for critical equipment such as oil-immersed power transformers, the moment of energization is actually when the real test begins.
The unique feature of an EPC project (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) is that the contractor delivers a complete system rather than a single piece of equipment.
As the “heart” of the entire power system, a transformer failure can impact far more than one piece of equipment. It may interrupt a production line, affect power supply to a community, or even impact an entire industrial park.
This is a responsibility that EPC contractors cannot and should not carry alone.

I have seen many projects where the transformer selection was accurate and installation was carried out strictly according to GB 1094 standards, yet problems started appearing only three months after operation: abnormal oil temperature rise, excessive partial discharge levels, bushing oil leakage, and other issues.
In the end, the problem was not that the equipment quality was insufficient. The real issue was that the “soft chain” of after-sales support was broken.
Therefore, building a reliable transformer after-sales support system for EPC projects is not a question of whether it is necessary, but rather how to build it properly and ensure long-term reliability.
Inside our company, we have an unwritten rule: when receiving a service request, we first ask three questions:
These three answers can usually help determine the urgency and possible cause of the failure.
Real response time starts from the moment the call is connected, not from the moment a technician is dispatched.
For EPC customers, Zisheng Electric divides its service response into three levels.
Level 1: Remote Diagnosis
An initial assessment is provided within 2 hours. In fact, 70–80% of reported “faults” can be eliminated through video communication. The cause may be an operation mistake, external protection activation, or another issue that does not require on-site intervention.
Level 2: On-Site Technical Support
If the problem is confirmed to be related to the transformer itself, our technical personnel arrive at the project site within 24 hours.
Level 3: Major Failure Response
For serious failures such as winding short circuits or multi-point grounding of the transformer core, we immediately activate a backup equipment coordination mechanism — ensuring power supply continuity first, then focusing on repair solutions.
This system was developed through real project experience.
Last year, in a photovoltaic EPC project in northwest China, a transformer suddenly triggered a light gas relay alarm on the night before grid connection. Our engineer traveled overnight to the site. After inspection, we found that the issue was caused by relay misoperation due to transportation vibration.
The problem was reset within ten minutes, and grid connection proceeded as planned the following day.
Without this structured response system, simply waiting until the next day for technical support could have delayed the entire project schedule.
What is the biggest concern for EPC customers?
It is waiting for imported or customized spare parts after equipment failure — sometimes for an entire month.
Transformer spare parts are not standard hardware components. Items such as bushings, tap changers, and Buchholz relays all have specific parameters depending on the transformer design.
It is unrealistic for EPC contractors to maintain their own spare parts inventory. The capital investment is high, and the variety of components is complex.
At Zisheng Electric, we have established transformer spare parts inventory centers in key regions including East China, South China, and Southwest China, covering commonly used models of our main products, including oil-immersed transformers and dry-type transformers.
Under emergency conditions, spare parts can be shipped immediately, with administrative procedures completed afterward.
This may not be considered a major innovation, and many manufacturers are unwilling to maintain such inventories because spare parts warehouses are pure cost centers.
However, for EPC projects, this is a basic reliability guarantee.
A single project may involve several or dozens of transformers. If one unit stops operation because of a missing bushing or other component, the resulting loss can far exceed the value of the spare part itself.
After-sales support is not simply about repairing equipment after a failure happens. A more effective approach
is helping customers operate correctly and maintain equipment properly before problems occur.

During the handover of every EPC project, we conduct a comprehensive technical training and knowledge transfer session. This is never treated as a routine procedure.
The electrical manager and operation supervisors must participate. We explain every important detail of the transformer, including key parameters, recommended protection settings, daily inspection requirements, and potential operation risks.
Everything is discussed in detail to ensure the operating team fully understands the equipment.
One important detail worth mentioning is that Zisheng Electric creates a dedicated full lifecycle health record for every transformer delivered from our factory.
From factory data such as short-circuit impedance test results and no-load loss measurements, to on-site installation records, withstand voltage test results, and initial energization parameters, all information is systematically recorded.
After that, every maintenance activity, inspection result, and troubleshooting event is continuously added to the record.
Three to five years later, the complete operating history of the transformer can be reviewed through this file, providing a clear understanding of the equipment’s operating characteristics and condition.
For EPC contractors, the value of this lifecycle record in future operation and maintenance is far greater than many people expect.
To provide a clearer understanding of our support capabilities, we have summarized our service system below. This represents the transformer after-sales support standards publicly committed by Zisheng Electric for EPC customers.
| Service Module | Specific Content | Response / Completion Time | Responsible Department |
|---|---|---|---|
| Remote Technical Support | Initial fault diagnosis through phone/video communication and guidance for emergency operation procedures | Response within 2 hours | Zisheng After-Sales Dispatch Center |
| Emergency On-Site Repair | Engineer dispatch to project location after confirming equipment failure | Within 24 hours after fault confirmation | Regional After-Sales Service Network |
| Regional Spare Parts Supply | Common spare parts including bushings, relays, tap changers, and other components | Emergency spare parts shipped within 12 hours | Regional Spare Parts Center |
| Technical Documentation Handover | Factory test reports, installation manuals, maintenance guides, and related technical documents | Provided together with equipment delivery | Zisheng Technical Documentation Team |
| Full Lifecycle Equipment Records | Continuous tracking of transformer data from manufacturing to retirement | Continuously updated and permanently stored | Zisheng Quality Management Department |
| Extended Warranty & Inspection Service | Paid extended warranty service, preventive inspection, and maintenance recommendations after warranty period | Contact initiated 3 months before warranty expiration | Zisheng After-Sales Service Department |
For most EPC projects, the period from project completion to warranty expiration usually lasts two to three years.
Many manufacturers reduce their service involvement immediately after the warranty period ends. However, the stable and mature operating stage of a transformer often begins after the third year.
At Zisheng Electric, after the warranty period expires, we provide paid extended warranty services. Customers can continue selecting our team to provide semi-annual preventive maintenance inspections and emergency technical support.
Even if customers choose not to continue the service contract, we still maintain the equipment records and remain available for technical consultation.
To put it simply — we manufacture the equipment, and nobody understands its operating characteristics better than we do.
Instead of allowing customers to rely on unfamiliar third-party repair services with uncertain quality, we prefer to continue supporting the equipment throughout its service life.
For EPC companies currently purchasing or planning to purchase transformers, we recommend clearly defining after-sales support requirements in the transformer procurement contract.
Important details should include:
These unclear areas often become sources of disputes in the future.
A transformer is a piece of equipment that can quietly serve reliably for decades when properly maintained. But if it is neglected, problems often appear at the most critical moments — when projects are under maximum production pressure.
A complete EPC project transformer after-sales support system is essentially an insurance policy for the project’s most critical equipment.
The real value of this protection becomes obvious when unexpected failures and downtime occur.
